My aunt lost 5 lbs in 1 week!!

Yesterday was a GREAT day. I went ice skating for an hour and a half, and it was a perfect day for it. I love ice-skating so much. =) We went for the first time last week, and right after I went online and bought a pair of skates so I don’t have to rent. We went again yesterday and right after we went online and bought Johnny a pair of skates, haha. We’re going to go at least once a week while the rink is open.

Then I walked my dog down to my mom’s house, took her fat Pembroke Welsh Corgi for a short walk, and walked Remy (my dog) back home. All in all it was about 20 minutes and 1 mile of walking – not too shabby for just wasting some time.

At 7:30 I met up with SJ at her apartment complex and we went swimming. I swam a lot of laps with a few breaks where I tread water or did water-resistance training in the shallow end. We went at it for an hour, then sat in the sauna for a while and talked. I LOVE swimming. Clearly, I was an otter in a past life. I’m a Scorpio, which is a water sign, and I don’t normally believe in that kind of junk but I really do have an affinity for water (apparently even in its frozen form!)

I’m really looking forward to this week. I’m starting P90X today. My aunt started it last week and she’s lost 5 ½ pounds already! WOW! So after work it’s Walk Away the Pounds with Dad, then I’m going to see if he wants to lift weights with me at his place M/W/F. Then I’ve got this yummy bean & veggie soup going in the crockpot for dinner, and then I’ll do P90X.

Tuesday I have my first belly dance and Zumba classes of this session. I was sick last week so I missed Zumba, so I’m excited to start back this week! I’m doing belly dance & Zumba instead of the Plyometrics DVD for P90X. Wednesday I’ll do WAtP & weights with Dad, then P90X. Thursday is WAtP, P90X, and swimming with SJ again. Friday will be WAtP & weights with Dad, P90X, and maybe ice-skating at night (woo!). Saturday I’ve got my 3rd and final snowboarding lesson (and P90X). Sunday will be P90X and then we’re going to a birthday party at my aunt’s place, and her pond is frozen over so (you guessed it!) more ice-skating! =)

So yeah! That ought to be interesting, LOL. I’m going to take P90X pretty easy and not throw myself into it crazy hard, since I’m doing plenty of other things in addition to it.

Xena not my happy face

Lean, Mean, Crime-Fighting Machine

Apparently I’m starting out with 2 ½ minutes of running on the treadmill, LOL. Tried to go for 5 this morning and just was completely winded after 2 ½. I think I’ll try hopping on the treadmill later tonight and giving it another go.

It’s still SUPER nice out – 35 degrees with a high of 43 today. Depending on where you live, that might not seem very warm to you, but here in Minnesota, January weather is usually closer to zero degrees. About 3-4 years ago, it was below zero for the entire month of January. So 43 is CRAZY warm. There’s not even any snow – which I am very sad about, since I got snowshoes for Christmas and haven’t been able to try them out yet!!

We went ice-skating yesterday and I had a total blast! I haven’t been ice-skating in forever, and I didn’t go often as a kid. My husband, mom, aunt, uncle, cousin, and a handful of friends came with, and it was really fun. =) My mom was really good despite not having been on skates in a long time, and it was cool to watch her be all fancy. I hopped online last night and bought a pair of skates, and I’m going to make ice-skating an activity I do every Sunday. I burned over 600 calories in 1 hour ice-skating! That’s crazy good, and it was so much fun the time just flew by. My face hurts from smiling as much as my thighs, calves, and booty do from skating.

That ought to help me get in good shape for rollerblading this summer, too! I’d like to be able to rollerblade or bike to work (it’s about 5 miles from my house) but right now there’s no way I can hack it that far blading. Maybe if I ice-skate for 2 hours every Sunday for the rest of the winter, I’ll be in good shape to blade to work come spring. =)

Belly Dancing and Zumba classes start tomorrow. I’m excited! I’m also going to start swimming with PEANUTSJ on Thursday and Sunday evenings again, so that will be great as well. With a combo of Walk Away the Pounds, Zumba/Belly Dance, swimming, and ice-skating, I’ll be a lean, mean, crime-fighting machine in NO TIME!

hatter come with me

Back to Basics

My plans are over-ambitious so I keep giving up before I even start. Time to readjust the plans. I’m going to do what I did (that worked for me!) when I started losing weight in 2011 – start small, and work my way up. Back then, I started with just 10 minutes of exercise a day, and wound up building up to a point where I was exercising 2-3 hours a day and LOVING IT.

SO. The plan:

* Walk Away the Pounds with Dad every day after work (or in the morning on the weekends)

* Take Earl (Dad’s fat dog) for progressively longer walks for Walk Away the Doggy Pounds every day after Dad and I do WAtP

* Run on the treadmill. Plan is to start with 15 minutes before work (5 min warm up, 5 minute run, 5 minute cool down) the first week. Then the next week wake up 5 minutes earlier and do 10 minutes of running, and add another 5 minutes to the run portion every week after that. Eventually I’ll have eased into waking up at 5 a.m. to run for an hour on the treadmill. I’m so sneaky, my brain and body won’t even realize what happened. MWAHAHAHAHA!

So there you have it – THE PLAN. I also aim to do some weight lifting after WAtP – I’ll have to see if Dad wants to do that with me to, as I plan to use his weight set in his basement, LOL. =) Also, I want to aim to play my dancing video games for half an hour most nights of the week. And I’ve got Zumba classes and a belly dancing class on Tuesday nights starting next week – I’m so excited! Belly dancing is from 5:00-5:45, and Zumba is from 6:00-7:00, so Tuesdays are preeeeetty much going to kick my butt, but that’s OK. I’m looking forward to it. =) I hope belly dancing class is fun!

I’m also going to go back to cycling my calories – I believe that was a HUGE part in losing that first 30 lbs last year. So I’ll consume 1200-1400 cal one week, then 1500-1700 the next, then 1800-2000, then start over again. I’m going to start my weeks on Saturday, since that’s my current weigh in day, and I’ll call tomorrow “Day 1.”

My plan for TODAY is to do Walk Away the Pounds with Dad (and Walk Away the Doggy Pounds with Earl) and sometime tonight I will hop on the treadmill and see how long I can keep up a run for. I want to see if 5 minutes of running is really where I want to start, or if I can start with a little more (10 minutes?) or if I need to aim lower. I guess I’ll find out tonight!! =)

Peter Pan Mermaid drown her

Will I ever learn? (A clue: no.)

Here it is, the 5th day of the bright shiny new year, and how have a done with my goals so far? Not so well.

BUT does that mean it's time to throw in the towel? HELL NO!

So I didn't start P90X on 1/1 like I'd planned. So I keep saying "tomorrow I'll start" or "today I'll start" and I don't. Does that mean I should give up COMPLETELY!? HELL NO!

Game change - put P90X on the back burner for a while. I'm just too intimidated to even start, so I'm not exercising AT ALL since I feel like a failure for not doing P90X. Solution: Cut P90X out of the equation!

2012 Resolutions:
Lose 50 lbs (If I can make it to 40 lbs lost again this year and KEEP IT ALL OFF THIS TIME, that would also be great)
Work on short term and long term house/life/family goals with John to prepare for BABIES in 2013 (!)

Action plan:
Spend 30 minutes a day working on items on house/life/family goals list
Do Walk Away the Pounds with Dad daily (and take Earl on his shortwalk so he can walk away his pounds too)
Do 1 hour of additional exercise a day - Walk Away the Pounds while watching a video, treadmill while reading a magazine, dancing/workout video games, snowboarding, snowshoeing, going out dancing... The goal is to MOVE for an hour.

Ready for NaNoWriMo tomorrow!

I've decided to work on my Snow White story. Going to leave the previously written prologue just the way it is (for now) and start fresh with chapter one. Going to use most of the sketch I've already got for ch 1-3, but am switching to a first person point of view, and going to switch off on chapters from Snow White's P.O.V. and Gyre's P.O.V. (he's one of the seven "dwarves") and maaaaaybe a few from the Evil Queen's P.O.V. I listened to my Snow White playlist while I walked on my lunch break today, and it got me right ramped up to do this thing!!! =) I'll probably post each day's writing here.... maybe.... or maybe some blurbs. I dunno. Haven't decided yet. BUT I AM GOING TO WRITE! WHEEEE!

What Would Batman Do?

I can’t believe it’s already been 10 months since I started this weight loss journey. I saw such phenomenal progress in the first 6 months: I lost 10 lbs the first month, 10 lbs the second month, 10 pounds over the next two months, and another 10 in the two month after that. Then I sat there and stagnated, since July. July, August, and September saw me not losing any weight (but not really gaining any either). I fluctuated within a two pound range for 3 months. Then in October I gained back 5 lbs, putting me at a net loss of 36 lbs so far this year.

I told myself originally that I want to lose 100 lbs. My “small” goal was to lose 50 lbs this year. I’ve got exactly 2 months left, and 14 pounds to lose.

I can do this, but I need to recommit. I need to come at my weight loss like I did back in January – fresh, determined, unrelenting. I’ve been “just for today”ing and “starting tomorrow”ing for too long now.

TODAY is Day One of the workout plan I’m calling “What Would Batman Do?” WWBD is INTENSE, but it’s only for two months. Then I can figure out where to go from there.

The Plan:
Eat right – Cycle calories (1200-1500 wk 1, 1500-1800 wk 2, 1800-2000 wk 3, repeat), cut out soda COMPLETELY (including diet sodas), drink 8+ cups of water daily.

Exercise –
- Monday Swim (a.m.) Walk (lunch) Curves (p.m.)
- Tuesday Yoga (a.m.) Jog (lunch) Zumba (p.m.)
- Wednesday Swim (a.m.) Walk (lunch) Curves (p.m.) Zumba (p.m.)
- Thursday Yoga (a.m.) Jog (lunch) Zumba (p.m.) Swim (p.m.)
- Friday Swim (a.m.) Walk (lunch) Curves (p.m.) Body Flow (p.m.
- Saturday Pick 2: BodyFlow, Cardio Kick, Turbo Kick, Workout Game/DVD
- Sunday Pick 2: BodyFlow, Cardio Dance, Zumba Gold, Workout Game/DVD

Rewards –
No soda all week = 1 soda w/ lunch on Monday
Bring lunch from home Mon-Fri = Lunch in the caf 1 day next week
Cook dinner 6 evenings/week = Eat out 1 night next week
Stay within sodium range every day for a week = bowl of kettlecorn on Sunday
Stay within calorie range every day for a week = Choose 1 “sleep-in” day next week
Do all scheduled workouts every day for a week = New book
Meet weight goal = Star Wars Blu-Ray box set + 2 new dresses

I’m off to a less than stellar start – I went to bed too early last night and woke up a good hour before my alarm, so I went back to sleep and woke up tired, so I reset my alarm for 45 minute later and skipped today’s morning swim. I will walk on my lunch break today, eat the lunch I brought from home, go to Curves after work, and go to the Y at 8:30 tonight to make up the swim I missed this morning. I’m also going to make an effort to stay up until 10:30 tonight so I will naturally wake up at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow (instead of going to bed at 9:30 and waking up at 4:30, which is what happened last night/this morning).

So! There you have it – my plan of action for the rest of the year. And from now on, whenever I feel like not doing what’s on the schedule, I’m going to ask myself “What Would Batman Do?” And the answer is always, of course, Batman would kick it in the face.

Geek at work

NaNoWriMo 2011

I just decided to attempt to do NaNoWriMo 2011. It starts on Tuesday (November 1st).

"At midnight on November 1, armed only with their wits, the vague outline
of a story, and a ridiculous deadline, more than 250,000 people around the world will set out to become
Why? Because November is National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, the world’s largest writing challenge
and nonprofit literary crusade. Participants pledge to write 50,000 words in a month, starting from scratch and
reaching “The End” by November 30. There are no judges, no prizes, and entries are deleted from the server
before anyone even reads them."

At 50,000 words in 30 days, that averages out to about 1,667 words a day. I'm going to shoot for 2k words a day. This ought to be interesting, since I've set myself a pretty strenuous workout schedule starting Oct 31st (swimming or yoga in the a.m., walking/jogging on my lunch break, and 1 hour of strength training or Zumba in the evening...) AND I still have a full time job that I need to go to. ;)

SO! I've got 3 days (and 1.5 hours) until READY SET GO! and I'm still not sure what the basic idea for my story is going to be. I have LOTS of ideas (some more vague than others, but ideas all the same) and I'm not really sure what to go with...

(1) Original story about a faerie lady who falls in love with a mortal and is exhiled (very basic storyline figured out, some character sketches started but not really fleshed out)
(2) Original story about the son of the lady in the previously mentioned story and a circus girl (very, VERY basic storyline figured out... OK, really just the end... some character sketches started but really flat so far)
(3) Retelling of The Little Mermaid (general feel of the story figured out, playlist of music that feels right. That's all I've got.)
(4) Modern retelling/twist of The 12 Dancing Princesses (a few vague notions formed, no story line, no character ideas)
(5) Retelling of Snow White (First chapter written and in desperate need of a re-write. Chapters 2 and 3 storyboarded. Basic plotline mapped out, character sketches started with some completed and well rounded)
(6) Modern twist of Little Red Riding Hood (started writing it and got about 4 pages in, not sure where to go from there, but have a good start...)
(7) Something completely different? Chick lit fluff?

BLURRRRRRGH. OK, I don't really have my ideas narrowed down AT ALL! I'm trying to figure out what I feel the most passionate about... And even though I don't really know at all where to take it or how to go at it, I'm leaning toward the novelization of the Little Mermaid story. My thoughts are to follow the original story fairly closely, just flesh out the details and give the characters more depth and substance. I kind of like the version of Snow White I have in my head as well though, since that sticks to the original enough to be recognizable, but also deviates majorly in a lot of (really neat!) ways. I ALSO kind of am intrigued by the idea of doing a modern version of The 12 Dancing Princesses, but have NO IDEA where to go with that or how to come at it....

So that's at least narrowed down a little more..... right? And the more I think about it, the more I want to do something I haven't already put a lot of work into (like the Snow White story) but instead to start from scratch and kinda fly by the seat of my pants...

Hrm. I just don't know what to do!!
